One fellow taught me how to tell if the antique had been repaired or if the chair had been recovered. The recovering of chairs seats with fabric often required the use of screws. In days of old, screws were not often identical. So by removing one old screw and examining it carefully you can get a lot of information about that chair, once you know what clues you are looking for. There are risks involved though so be certain you have the approval of the dealer at the antique store before you do this. Actually, the dealer might prefer to do this for you to demonstrate the authenticity of his products.
