Antique furniture fascinates and intrigues its lovers. Each antique has its own personal history and it brings the time period when it was made into today's frenetic world. A carefully selected antique furniture accent in your living room or den can transform the ordinary into extraordinary. Antiques furniture can convert a routine living room into a stylish decor. Selecting genuine antiques can be both an art and a science.
Whether you are seeking antique furniture for a financial investment or for decorative functions or personal family reasons will have some influence on how involved you get in the finding and selecting of these antique treasures. In some cases you may have inherited some family antiques and simply want to know how valuable they are as part of your decision over whether to keep them or not. I have been in that position. Ah. If I knew then what I know today, how my choices may have been different. That original Singer treadle sewing machine from Grandma would surely be in my sitting room today!
So the finding process may be easier than you think. It may come to you. Or you might begin to look for antique auctions to visit before you buy. I enjoy browsing in antique stores and looking in on estate sales to see what is popping up in different regions.
The selecting process will be a lot more personal and it will be directly related to why you want the antique furniture in the first place. You do want to make sure it is authentic. One fellow taught me how to tell if the antique had been repaired or if the chair had been recovered. The recovering of chairs seats with fabric often required the use of screws. In days of old, screws were not often identical. So by removing one old screw and examining it carefully you can get a lot of information about that chair, once you know what clues you are looking for. There are risks involved though so be certain you have the approval of the dealer at the antique store before you do this. Actually, the dealer might prefer to do this for you to demonstrate the authenticity of his products.
Enjoy the quest for the past as you seek and select a piece of antique furniture that suits your home and interests. There are so many styles from which to choose. Even as much as what color wood do you want. It is fascinating. Have fun.
